The dire wolf is a canine species native to the northern forests and mountains of the world. It appears as a slightly larger and more powerfully built type of wolf with larger fangs, a larger head and a larger chest cavity. An average dire wolf is 1 meter tall at the shoulder and weighs 80 kg. The statistics above represent an average dire wolf though larger and tougher specimens do exist. Dire wolves have shaggy fur and thick hides that provides them with some protection. Fur cover is typically grey, dark grey or black.
A dire wolf has a powerful bite which it uses to great effect in combat. Dire wolves hunt in packs and use coordinated attacks. They will try to gang up 3 or 4 per target, if possible.
Dire wolves are agile and difficult to strike. They are also excellent runners and can sprint at tremendous speed for short distances, even over rough and rocky terrain.
Dire wolves prefer the colder northern climates. They can be found in the forests, hills, highlands and mountains throughout the north.
Dire wolves are predators and strictly carnivorous. Their prey is primarily elk, deer, wild boar and wild hares. They hunt in packs using coordinated attacks to take down larger prey. There are reports of large packs of dire wolves bringing down behemoths.
Dire wolves have excellent hearing and smell and will smell an adventuring party from 3 kilometers away.
Due to their good sense of smell, dire wolves can fight invisible opponents with reduced penalties.
